CMC-AP2017 The 1st Asian Pacific Conference on Concept Mapping

 

The 1st Asian Pacific Conference on Concept Mapping (CMC-AP 2017) will take place in Beijing, China from Sept 20-22, 2017.

The theme for CMC-AP 2017 will be Learning for Understanding the World and OurselvesWith the development of technology and society, processing but not owning, memorizing, or being able to access information becomes essential. Similarly, e.g., in mathematics, doing arithmetic or more advanced integrations or differentiations is becoming less important than describing the world with mathematical concepts and abstracting mathematical concepts from the world. Meaningful learning is the key to understanding, and concept mapping helps to develop the ability to learn meaningfully.

The 1st Asian Pacific Conference on Concept Mapping is a regional extension to the worldwide Concept Mapping Conference (CMC), and follows on the success of the first seven CMC Conferences held in Pamplona (Spain), San José (Costa Rica), Tallinn (Estonia) & Helsinki (Finland), Viña del Mar (Chile), Valletta (Malta), Santos (Brazil) and Tallinn (Estonia) in bringing together from all over the world scholars and practitioners interested in concept mapping.  Considering the recent boost in the number of users in the Asian and Pacific region, CMC-AP 2017 will be a chance to share thoughts and ideas on concept mapping for all users and researchers, especially in the Asian and Pacific region. It is being organized by Beijing Normal UniversityBeihang University and the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition, USA. The Conference is aimed at all persons interested in the use of concept maps (based on the work of Dr. Joseph Novak), including, but not limited to: facilitation of learning; eliciting, capturing, archiving, and using “expert” knowledge; planning instruction; assessment of “deep” understandings; research planning; collaborative knowledge modeling; creation of “knowledge portfolios”; curriculum design; eLearning, and administrative and strategic planning and monitoring. We expect participants from a broad range of fields presenting a wide variety of research and applications of concept mapping. All presentations at the conference are expected to include time for questions, answers, and scholarly discussion.

Languages

CMC-AP2017’s official language is English. However, some sessions will include simultaneous translation of oral presentations between Chinese and English.  CMC-AP2017 offers the opportunity, both oral and posters, for presentations in English and Chinese. However, it will be the presenters’ job to communicate with their visitors for the poster sessions and for the sessions of micro-analysis and discussion of lecturing videos.

Presentation Categories

Presentation categories include:

  • Oral Presentations of Research Work (with research paper)
  • Oral Presentations of Innovative Experiences (with paper)
  • Poster Presentation (with paper)
  • Micro-analysis and discussion of activity videos (with paper)

All submissions will be evaluated and selected by the Program Committee.

  • Oral Presentations with Research Paper: Full papers are reports of completed research accepted by a panel of experts and peers (the Program Committee) and will be published in the conference proceedings. There are three categories for papers: (a) empirical research, (b) model or theory development, and (c) theorizing from the literature. The time allotted for each session is 45 minutes (30 minutes presentation/15 minutes discussion). Audience participation, as a principle of adult education, is stressed. Full papers submissions have a length of up to 10 pages. Authors of accepted Oral Presentations with Paper are expected to physically attend the conference to present their paper in order for the paper to be included in the Proceedings and as part of the Program. Papers submitted but not accepted for Oral Presentation may be recommended accepted as a Poster Presentation with Paper. We recommend that a concept map summarizing the paper be included as part of the paper.
  • Poster Presentations with Paper: The posters will form a visual display prepared by conference participants describing a research initiative, program, pedagogical model, and/or best practice on how concept mapping is applied in a variety of settings. Poster presentations serve as an effective forum for the exchange of information and a means to communicate ideas, research, and programs. Poster papers should have a maximum length of 4 pages and will be published in the conference proceedings. Authors of accepted Poster Presentations with Paper are expected to attend the conference to present and explain their poster. We recommend that a concept map summarizing the poster be included as part of the paper and in the poster.
  • Innovative Experiences: These sessions will include several presentations, each 15 minutes, on Innovative Experiences in the use of concept mapping, whether it’s in the classroom, in industry, in organizations, or personal uses. Teachers are encouraged to share innovative ways of introducing or using concept mapping with their students, for curriculum design, etc. Practitioners are encouraged to present innovative uses of concept mapping in organizations, corporations, industry, consulting, etc. Measured, quantitative or qualitative results are not needed, as the focus is on sharing experiences, not research results. Authors need to submit a two-page description of their Innovative Experience. Authors of accepted Innovative Experiences are expected to physically attend the conference to present their work. If necessary, Innovative experiences presentations can be accompanied by one or more Micro-analysis presentations from the same author or authors from the same team. In that case, please make us aware of so in submitting the papers and videos. We recommend that a concept map summarizing the Innovative Experience be included as part of the paper.
  • Micro-analysis and discussion of activity videos: These sessions will be 60 minutes long split between 30-minute videos of activities and 30 minutes audience participation. The conference will arrange an expert host for each of these discussions to organize discussion and also to comment on the activities. Submissions to these sessions are required to provide a video file, together with a paper to explain the central message of the video and intention of the author in presenting such an activity video. The paper can have maximum length of 4 pages. We recommend that a concept map summarizing the video be included as part of the paper. It is encouraged that the authors submit their videos and paper in a concept map form, ie. attach the edited/separated video files and the paper file to a concept map and upload the map to the Beijing Normal University Cmap Server, which can be accessed easily via CmapTools.

Authors of all accepted submissions need to pay the corresponding conference fee for the submission to be included in the Proceedings and included in the Academic Program of the conference.

The Proceedings of the Conference will be published as a book and posted on the Conference website and also published by Beijing Normal University Press. A selected number of English-written papers will be included in the CMC2018 special volume book, while a selected number of Chinese-written papers will be recommended to be published in one of the following three journals Modern Educational TechnologyModern Distance Education Research and Open Education Research. Early Submission

CMC-AP2017 includes an Early Submission date for authors that need an early response to their paper submission. Authors who require a longer period of time to obtain financial support to participate in the conference should consider the Early Submission. Proposals accepted during the Early Submission process don’t need to submit again during the regular submission process.
