With the acceleration of the global aging process, rural areas are facing increasing challenges of age-appropriate design, especially in China, where many villages have a high proportion of elderly people and relatively weak infrastructure. In order to improve the quality of life of the elderly, the age-appropriate design of public space is particularly important. Ecological healing, as a design concept that focuses on the interaction between physical and mental health and the natural environment, has gradually become a key element in age-appropriate design. Taking Guojiazhuang Village of Jinan City as an example, this paper discusses the application of ecological healing principle in the design of age-appropriate rural public space, and proposes a design scheme to improve the physical and mental health and quality of life of the elderly by integrating natural landscape and age-appropriate design elements.
First, the research reviewed the background of age-appropriate design and eco-healing design, and clarified that the goal of age-appropriate design is to meet the physical, psychological and social needs of the elderly and improve their quality of life, while the eco-healing design emphasizes the promotion of physical and mental health through natural elements. Combining these two, this paper discusses how to effectively apply the principle of ecological healing to the rural public space, especially in the case of the increasing number of elderly people, how to improve the rural public space to enhance the quality of life of the elderly.
Through field investigation, spatial analysis and ecological assessment methods, this study analyzed the use of public space, the needs of the elderly and the ecological resources of the village. It is found that the public space of Guojiazhuang village has some problems, such as unreasonable design, lack of barrier-free facilities and insufficient use of natural landscape resources. To this end, the study proposed an age-appropriate design scheme combining the principles of ecological healing, increasing green space, leisure area and barrier-free access, optimizing the spatial layout, and meeting the needs of the elderly for health, comfort and social space.
After implementation, the design scheme significantly improved the function and environment of the public space, increased the frequency of use of the elderly group, improved health and social activities, and enhanced emotional belonging. The results show that the introduction of ecological healing principles not only effectively improves the design of age-appropriate space, but also provides a healthier and more friendly living environment for the elderly.
