We begin with the history of Jordan algebras. We define them and their connections with alternative algebras. We emphasize matrix Jordan algebras. Here we discuss the Albert algebra, introduced by Jordan for a new mathematical framework for quantum mechanics. Although it was insufficient because of the degrees of freedom, it has found new applications in particle and nuclear physics.
